History of Association

In 2004 Professor Yum-Tong SIU 蕭蔭堂教授 and Professor Sau-Fong SIU 黃秀芳教授 founded the University of Hong Kong Alumni Network of New England, based in Boston, to provide opportunities for networking among former students and employees of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), who have established residency in the New England region of six states (MA, CT, RI, NH, VT, ME). In January 2017 the name of the group was changed to Hong Kong University Alumni Association Boston-New England.

Purposes

The purposes of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) Alumni Association of Boston- New England are:

  • To provide networking and socializing opportunities for HKU alumni of all ages and visiting staff/students.
  • To share helpful information and give support to newcomers, especially HKU alumni who are graduate students, or postdocs or visiting scholars in New England.
  • To mentor HKU undergraduate exchange students studying in New England colleges.
  • To foster connections between HKU alumni in New England and their alma mater.

These purposes are achieved through large and small gatherings, a directory, website and Facebook. The formation of interest groups based on professions or hobbies is encouraged.

Overview

  • Over 100 alumni names are listed in the directory. In addition, the names of a new crop of exchange students are added every semester.
  • More than 60% of the alumni have attended at least one alumni gathering.
  • Almost all reside in the Greater Boston area with a few in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania and New York.
  • The graduation years of members range from 1950s to 2020s.
  • The proportion of young alumni has increased significantly in recent years.
